A stranger could pick the display name of an existing contact ("Mom")
and appear as that contact. Messages from a key that is not in the
contact list now open a message request labelled "(unknown)": no
replies, read receipts, typing indicators, calls or name in
notifications until the user accepts it and names the contact
themselves. Names that look like an existing contact (case, diacritics,
Cyrillic/Greek homoglyphs, invisible characters) also show a warning in
the real contact's chat.
When the relay account of a known contact shows up with a different
key, the chat shows "safety number changed", verification is cleared
and the session that now belongs to the other key is dropped before
sending, so a reply never goes to the new key.
An unlocked phone was enough to read the 24-word recovery phrase. The
phrase, backup export and import, the duress PIN, a longer auto-lock,
turning off screen security, enabling biometrics and deleting the
account now ask for the PIN (or biometrics with biometricOnly) every
time. The duress session never shows the phrase. PIN checks outside the
lock screen count towards the same failure throttle.
Calls: `call` was missing from the known content types, so every offer was
acknowledged and dropped; the call screen column now fills the width (the
avatar jumped left after hang-up); a ring started from a push ends after
12 s when no offer arrives; STUN fallback when no TURN credentials.
Registration: X-Sepot-Identity-Proof lets a new device reclaim an existing
identity; retry backs off from 30 s to 10 min and exposes a conflict flag.
Prekeys: PrekeysLow triggers a batch of 50 one-time prekeys via POST
/v1/keys; the signed prekey rotates weekly, the Kyber prekey monthly.
Messaging: crypto operations run serially (concurrent encrypts derived the
same message key); stop() waits for in-flight deliveries (auto-lock between
decrypt and persist lost messages); disappearing-message cleanup no longer
overwrites fresh messages; a push wake-up reconnects stale connections; the
outbox carries polls and mentions; length limits on wire input.
Storage: a duress session never exposes the real identity or phrase, does
not start networking and cannot touch the keystore; deleting data in a
duress session leaves the real account alone; PIN guessing is throttled
(5 misses, then 30 s doubling up to 15 min); the duress blob shares the salt
so unlock time does not reveal which PIN was entered; iOS keychain items are
this-device only; biometrics are biometric-only; screen security defaults
to on and is applied after unlock; tapjacking filter in MainActivity.
Tests: content types, shared-salt unwrap, duress isolation.
A new look across the app and a set of everyday messaging features.
Interface
- Home screen with Chats, Contacts and Settings tabs, a large title,
search across chats and message text (diacritics-insensitive), filters
and pinned chats.
- Conversation view with a translucent header and composer, grouped
bubbles, author avatars and colours in groups, swipe to reply, an
"N new messages" marker, a jump-to-latest button and in-chat search.
- Contact and group profiles: verification, shared photos, groups in
common, disappearing messages, mute, block; members, admin badges,
adding people, rename and leave for groups.
- Full-screen photo viewer that pages through the whole conversation.
- A stable avatar colour per person and a clearly visible read state.
Messaging
- Polls in chats and groups, single or multiple choice, with votes that
can be changed or withdrawn; older clients see them as text.
- Drafts survive leaving a chat and show in the chat list.
- Forwarding of messages, photos, files and voice messages.
- Notes to self: a local-only, encrypted chat that never reaches the
relay.
- @mentions in groups that notify even when the group is muted.
- Typing indicators sent as ephemeral messages, opt-in and mutual like
read receipts.
- Delivery and read times per message and per group member.
- Profile photos, cropped, resized and stripped of metadata, delivered
encrypted to contacts.
- Voice message playback at 1.5x and 2x.
- Call buttons in 1:1 chats and call log entries.
Fixes
- Muted groups no longer notify: muting was checked against the
author's chat instead of the group.
- A blocked contact could unblock itself by changing its delivery
address.
- Read receipts no longer regress to delivered when a late delivery
receipt arrives.
- A message marked as failed corrects itself once it is delivered.
- Double ticks in groups now mean delivered to every member.
Registration failures from the distributor were swallowed, so push looked
enabled while nothing arrived. Without wake-ups Android suspends the app
and messages only show up once the user opens it — which looks like broken
delivery even though the relay has them queued.
The failure is now remembered and surfaced in Settings, and the chat list
carries a dismissible line explaining the state.
Fixes reported by testers and found in an app review:
- First message right after install no longer fails. Before the app
finished registering with the relay, the outgoing message could crash on
a null delivery address. The profile field is now optional and the send
path throws a clear "still connecting, try again shortly" error while
registration completes in the background.
- The QR code and share link now appear only once the delivery address is
ready. Previously a link generated before the first connection lacked
routing, so the other side could not send the first message. The screen
now shows a connecting state and reactively swaps in the QR when ready.
- Incomplete contact links are rejected on import instead of failing at
first send, with a clear prompt to ask for a fresh link.
- Auto-lock no longer silences the app: after locking and unlocking,
messaging is restarted (it previously stayed dead until app restart).
- Group messages are marked failed on a non-per-member send error instead
of hanging in the "sending" state forever.
- Hardened the relay client against a rare duplicate connection when
toggling Tor or locking mid-connect, and fromShareString now rejects a
delivery address of the wrong length.
- Pin unifiedpush below 6.2.0 to drop the webcrypto dependency (its native
framework lacks LC_ENCRYPTION_INFO and blocked the iOS upload).
- Skip Android release lint (network dependency check hangs on the build
host and adds no value for a Flutter app).
Settings crashed with a TypeError: the profile card passed a
SepotFingerprint object where the localized string formatter expects
a String (hidden behind a `dynamic` parameter). Also fixes RangeError
in avatar initials (empty names, double spaces) and switches initials
to grapheme clusters so emoji don't get split.
New photo preview screen: a captured or picked photo no longer sends
immediately — it opens in a preview with freehand drawing (7 colours,
undo), draggable text overlay, 90° rotation and a caption field.
Nothing leaves the device until Send is tapped.
Incoming-content hardening: decryption and content processing are now
separated in the delivery path. Once an envelope is decrypted the
ratchet has advanced, so redelivery can never help — permanently
malformed content (FormatException/TypeError) is acked and dropped
instead of poisoning the queue on every reconnect. Attachment metadata
now validates base64 of the crypto fields up front, and a corrupt
inline thumbnail no longer breaks bubble rendering.
PNG without real transparency (screenshots, edited photos) is now
re-encoded as JPEG — several times smaller on the wire.
Tests: 116 (new widget tests for Settings and the photo preview,
AttachmentMeta wire validation).
Initial public release. Anonymous on-device identity (no phone number,
e-mail, or password), Signal-protocol cryptography (X3DH + PQXDH, Double
Ratchet, sealed sender) via libsignal, a metadata-minimizing relay,
group chats, disappearing messages, encrypted local storage, optional
Tor transport, and a UI localized into Czech, English, German, Russian,
and Italian.
